Meet Rho Caldwell

Rho Caldwell is a long-distance motorcycle rider, YouTuber, and high school chemistry teacher who finds confidence and empowerment on the open road. Riding a Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special, she documents her endurance rides and personal growth through motorcycling on her channel Riding With Rho, encouraging others to ride at their own pace and trust their journey.

On a crisp fall weekend in Virginia, the NOCO Stories team met Rho Caldwell - a high school chemistry teacher by trade, but an endurance rider by heart. As she pulled up on her 2021 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special, the rumble of the engine seemed to announce more than just her arrival; it announced her presence. Yet, as Rho tells it, this commanding confidence wasn't always her default state.

"I used to be very shy. I didn't really like to interact with people," Rho told us while reflecting on her journey. Growing up as an only child in a military family, moving every few years meant she was always the "new girl," which fostered a reserved personality. But somewhere along the way, between the demands of adulthood and the classroom, she felt a need to reclaim the "daredevil spirit" of her youth - the little girl who loved roller coasters and seeking adventure.

For Rho, that adventure came on two wheels. "I wanted to see the world... doing it my way," she explained. However, entering the world of motorcycling, especially as a woman, came with its own set of anxieties.

The Power of Preparation

The Power of Preparation

Long-distance riding requires more than just enthusiasm; it requires immense mental fortitude. Rho admits that early on, the planning phase was daunting.

What if I got tired? What if I broke down? What if I couldn't handle it?

Those "what ifs" became a reality on a trip to Jacksonville, Florida. While cruising down I-95, her bike suddenly cut off in the middle of the highway. It’s a rider’s nightmare: 80 miles per hour one second, and dead silence the next. But this time, Rho was prepared.

"It has saved my life on a highway," Rho said, referencing her NOCO Boost. Pulling onto the shoulder with her sisters acting as a pit crew, she accessed her battery, connected the Boost, and was back on the road within ten minutes.

For Rho, carrying the Boost isn't just about jump-starting a battery; it's about jump-starting her confidence. "Having the Boost gives me the peace of mind that should it cut off, I can restart it," she explained. That security allows her to focus on the joy of the ride - the wind, the scenery, and the meditative state of the road - rather than the fear of being stranded.

Today, Rho documents her journeys on her YouTube channel, Riding With Rho, inspiring a community of riders who might not fit the traditional mold. Her message is simple: "Ignore the noise". whether that noise is negative comments or your own internal doubts.

"I ride for me and I share those rides because I want other people to know that they can do it too," she told us. The transformation is palpable. The shy military kid has become a woman who can ride 18 hours a day, fix her own bike, and command a room with newfound confidence.

As we wrapped up our shoot, watching Rho navigate the winding roads of Virginia, it was clear that her journey is about more than miles covered. It’s about the person she becomes with every mile marker passed. "It makes me feel powerful," she said with a smile. "It makes me feel like I can do anything".

Rho’s Top 3 Tips for New Riders

If you are feeling anxious about planning your first long-distance trip, Rho suggests starting with these three essentials:

1. Maintain Your Bike

1. Maintain Your Bike

Peace of mind starts in the garage. "Make sure that your bike is taken care of, that your tires are good, and you've done your T-CLOCS(Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis, Stand)," Rho advises. A well-maintained bike is the foundation of a safe trip.

Peace of mind is the most important piece of gear. Rho advises always keeping a tool kit with the essentials on the bike, including a tire repair kit, an air compressor, and a portable jump starter so you are ready for the unexpected.

3. Ride Your Ride

3. Ride Your Ride

This is the big one. "Don't ever try to be like the next person. Your ride is your ride," she insists. Don't worry about how fast or far others are going; go at your own pace and on your own terms.
